The Lights Came On in Avon — And Cleveland Noticed

There’s a moment, right before the first bell, when a stadium goes quiet. Twenty-three hundred people, the lake breeze coming in over the outfield wall, the cage lit up under the night sky at ForeFront Field — and for one breath, nobody moves. Then the first fighter walks out, the crowd comes alive, and you realize something is being born right in front of you.

That’s what June 5th felt like. That was the night Legends Fight Series brought live professional MMA to ForeFront Field for the first time in the stadium’s history — and Northeast Ohio showed up like it had been waiting for it.

The Media Took Notice — And That’s a Big Deal

I want to be honest about why this matters to me. When you build something from the ground up — when you rebrand, take a risk on a new venue, and bet that Cleveland is hungry for elite combat sports — you don’t get to know if anyone’s paying attention until the lights come on.

Then The Chronicle-Telegram ran the story.

Their coverage, “ForeFront Field hosts MMA event; more planned this summer,” captured exactly what we set out to do. The card featured a full range of weight classes with both amateur and professional fighters, and — this is the part that hits home — six of those fighters came straight out of the Cleveland area, including two from right here in Lorain County: Drew Hatcher, an amateur welterweight out of Elyria, and Devin Polk, an amateur bantamweight out of Avon who made his MMA debut on home soil.

That’s not a national promotion flying in talent. That’s local fighters, in front of their own community, on a real stage. When a regional paper of record covers your event and tells the world more is coming this summer, you’ve stopped being a one-night idea and become a movement.

We Weren’t the Only Ones Talking About It

The Chronicle wasn’t alone. The buzz around Friday Night Fights spread across Northeast Ohio media and the combat sports world:

  • Our home venue, the Lake Erie Crushers, announced the partnership and called Friday Night Fights “a new chapter” in a legacy that’s served the Lorain County community since 2009 — over 200 events a year, and now ours among them.
  • OurSports Central carried the news that ForeFront Field would host pro MMA for the first time in stadium history.
  • LorainCounty.com featured the series in its summer entertainment lineup, putting us right alongside the events this community already loves.
  • And over on Tapology, the fans did what fans do — lighting up the discussion threads. My favorite comment summed it up: a great first card, a ton of finishes, and people already asking what’s next.

When the press, the venue, and the fans are all telling the same story, you don’t have to convince anybody anymore. You just have to keep showing up.

What June Actually Looked Like

For those who weren’t in the building: Will Baxter closed the night with a massive knockout that brought the whole stadium to its feet. Devin Polk announced himself with a statement debut. And from the opening bout to the main event, fighters left everything in the cage — exactly the kind of “real fighters, real moments” we promised when we launched this thing. The event broadcast on UFC Fight Pass and Combat Sports Now, putting Avon, Ohio in front of a global audience.

This is what we mean when we say we want to be the Midwest’s home for elite MMA and boxing. Not someday. Now.

Next Up: July 31st, Back at ForeFront Field

Here’s the part I’m most fired up about. June was the proof of concept. July is where we raise the bar.

On Friday, July 31st, Friday Night Fights returns to ForeFront Field in Avon for the second event of our inaugural summer series. New fight card, more local talent earning their shot, and the same electric open-air atmosphere under the lights. Gates and bell times, full card, and ticket tiers — from $30 general admission up through VIP and premium seating — are at legendsfightseries.com.

Then we run it back one more time on August 28th to close out the summer.

This Is Bigger Than One Night

I started Legends Fight Series with my co-founder Troy Speakman because we believe Northeast Ohio deserves world-class combat sports it can call its own — built on local fighters, hosted in places this community already loves, delivered with production that makes you feel like you’re witnessing something special.

June 5th told us we were right. The coverage told us the region agrees. Now it’s on us to keep earning it, one Friday night at a time.

If you were there in June — thank you. You were part of the start of something. If you missed it, July 31st is your shot to be in the building when the next Legend emerges.

The lights are coming back on in Avon. Don’t miss it.

See you cageside.
